Perhaps the most exciting thing about leading the Turf & Ornamentals business for BASF is our commitment to innovation. As a basic manufacturer we work hard to bring new products and innovations to market to meet the needs of the turf professional.
Last year, we brought four new herbicides into our portfolio including postemergents Drive® XLR8, Onetime™, and Segment™, as well as FreeHand® 1.75G, a preemergent for landscape ornamentals. In 2009, we’ll begin to see and hear success stories from end users on all of those products.
Also this year our pipeline of innovation will bear two new products for use in the golf market, Honor™ fungicide and Tower® herbicide. Honor is a combination of boscalid and pyraclostrobin and brings good broad spectrum disease control to golf course superintendents by combining these two highly effective active ingredients.

Tower® herbicide unveiling drummed up excitement at the Golf Industry Show
The 2009 Golf Industry Show was a success once again. Specifically, golf course superintendents were curious about the large Tower® herbicide logo in our BASF booth which led to a few “what’s that” conversations and one possible product demo. BASF Turf Jeopardy really drew a crowd, as well as the turf textbook signings with Dr. L.B. McCarty and Dr. Joe Vargas. And, the BASF Blues Bash party was a hit once again. Our DSR customers and VIP golf course superintendents really did enjoy themselves.
BASF welcomes Indiana golf course superintendents to FarmLinks
I attended FarmLinks the week following the Golf Industry Show where we hosted golf course superintendents from Indiana along with Harrells staff from central Indiana. We changed the schedule slightly because of the weather and it worked out perfectly. We arrived and completed Toro and BASF presentations that afternoon, played golf the next morning followed by the “On the Course Tourâ€? and then finished with Agrium the last morning prior to departures. We had great attendees with lots of questions and interaction. Lastly, BASF FarmLinks Project Leader Brian Thompson did an excellent job educating the group about BASF product innovations and research. Brian’s background in Indiana, as well as his relationships, really added tremendous value to BASF’s session. Thanks to Brian also for welcoming a few of his old friends down from northern Indiana. Keep up the good work B.T.

Tower® herbicide provides turf professionals with new active ingredient
BASF Turf & Ornamentals has received federal registration for Tower® herbicide, a liquid, preemergent product that gives golf course superintendents broad-spectrum control of small-seeded broadleaves, grasses and sedges, including yellow nutsedge. Launched in 2008 for ornamentals and landscape use, Tower herbicide’s active ingredient, dimethenamid-p, is a new active ingredient in the turf market.
The EPA granted golf course registration for Tower herbicide last month and we are now working on state registrations. Tower is currently undergoing trials at major universities and FarmLinks, with results being announced during upcoming field days. Tower will be available for sale later this fall through the BASF Early Order Program.
For even broader preemergent weed control, superintendents can tank mix Tower with Pendulum® AquaCap™ or other preemergence herbicides.
Broad-spectrum Honorâ„¢ fungicide helps superintendents maximize disease control applications
Superintendents are increasingly seeking more disease control with fewer applications. It’s one of the ways they define value. To support that need, BASF Turf & Ornamentals developed and federally registered Honor™ fungicide for use on golf courses. Honor fungicide is a combination of two highly effective active ingredients — boscalid and pyraclostrobin. It is a broad-spectrum fungicide that controls the industry’s most prevalent diseases and will be labeled at the state level in the coming fall months.
Stay tuned to www.basfturftalk.com and www.betterturf.com for release dates of Tower herbicide and Honor fungicide.

Stone Mountain Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga., and TurfNet recently honored a 12-year-old canine course veteran for his excellence in geese chasing, tail wagging and companionship. Cushman, a Labrador retriever mix that also answers to his nickname, ‘The Wonder Dog,’ is a valued member of the Stone Mountain staff. His responsibilities include wildlife traffic control, guest relations, environmental outreach and retrieval of feathered objects from aquatic areas. He received this award in conjunction with his appearance in the 2009 Superintendent’s Best Friend Calendar which is sponsored by BASF Turf & Ornamentals. Watch the video below to see Cushman accept his award!

Bloggin. Nawlins Style.
In the weeks leading up to the GIS in New Orleans I had many a conversation with people from my part of the world who were NOT attending “The Show. No surprise given what we’re all going through with the (shhhh) E Word. However, let me just say, the show turned out to be FANTASTIC. There were tons of exhibitors, and golf course superintendent traffic was steady. It may not have been massive, but it was steady. Thanks to those of you who stopped by the BASF booth, it was great to see so many familiar faces and to catch up.
