Snow Mold: The Scourge of Golf Course Superintendents in the Northern U.S.

BASF has well-tested fungicide programs for management of snow mold disease pressure. We have many successes in northern Ohio and Michigan from the snowbelt of Cleveland up through Michigan to include the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

We hear comments from golf course superintendents that BASF fall-applied snow mold fungicide applications have given them some of the best golf course greens coming out of winter they have experienced in a long time. Golf course superintendents who apply Insignia® fungicide + Trinity® fungicide + Chlorothalonil in late-October to mid-November have not experienced Poa annua desiccation during the winter due to ice damage.

snow-mold.jpgBASF has a track record of good snow mold fungicide performance backed by excellent research from university locations at Michigan State University, the University of Wisconsin, Colorado State University and others. BASF has developed recommendations for moderate to high, moderate, and low snow mold disease pressure for greens, tees and fairways. Click here to download the 2009 BASF Snow Mold Fungicide Recommendations Sheet.

Recommendations: Moderate to High Snow Mold Pressure—Greens & Tees

1st week October 2009

Apply Curalan® EG fungicide @ 1.0 ounces per 1,000 square feet + Chlorothalonil @ 7.5 pounds per acre

Late October to mid-November 2009

Apply Insignia® fungicide @ 0.7ounces per 1,000 square feet + Trinity® fungicide @ 1.0 ounces per 1,000 square feet + Chlorothalonil @ 10.0 pounds per acre

Benefits of this program:

1.) Good control of gray snow mold, microdochium patch and fusarium

2.) Excellent late fall clean-up of dollar spot from four different chemistries

3.) A well-timed foundation in the fall for anthracnose and take-all patch which will result in improved efficacy of spring and summer fungicide applications

Recommendations: Moderate to High Snow Mold Pressure—Fairways

1st week October 2009

Apply Curalan® EG fungicide @ 1.0 ounces per 1,000 square feet + Chlorothalonil @ 7.5 pounds per acre
