Family matters – Take a moment to thank them for supporting our work
Since the last update, my wife and I celebrated our 20-year wedding anniversary. We took a one-week vacation to Pigeon Forge, Tenn. We found a comfortable secluded cabin in the hills of Pigeon Forge near Gatlinburg to spend some quality time together. Many of my friends and customers feel my wife deserves an award for putting up with me for 20 years.
On a side note – My grandson is a celebrity!
Our grandson, who is almost 12-months-old, is now officially a celebrity. His picture can be viewed on this Evenflo product package. He was used as a model for a product called the ExerSaucer Splash that will be on sale this holiday season. But back to the business of turf …

BASF is working with the entire turfgrass team at UT in various research areas. Among the trials that were on tour were fungicide work showing Emerald ® fungicide on bentgrass greens for control of dollar spot, and a suggested BASF fungicide rotation program for bentgrass greens management as compared to turfgrass quality throughout the summer from the best UT Program and other companies. Results from an on golf course trial for zoysia patch control was talked about with Trinity ® fungicide applied with two applications in the fall as the best management program for that disease and product. Herbicide work was evident in both warm and cool season grasses with work on Virginia buttonweed in bermudagrass with sequential applications of Onetime ® herbicide as one of the stops creating some interest. Crabgrass and goosegrass control was shown with many products including the new BASF product Tower ® herbicide.
For those of you who could not attend the Field Day this year, check out this short video created by the UT staff recapping the event here. One of the first shots is of Wayne Ducote, Senior Sales Specialist for BASF -Â he’s the handsome guy standing with yellow shirt on.
Talk to you soon.

As another summer closes we see some expected and unexpected challenges for turf professionals. Those pesky weeds, diseases and insects arrived again like clockwork, although pressures were light in some areas this year.
Unexpectedly, some golf courses dramatically loosened their membership requirements and lowered fees to retain and gain members in a tough economy. But that meant little relief for the superintendent as all old and new members want a beautiful and healthy course in trade for their hard earned money.
We learned some lawn care operators (LCO) began targeting only homeowners that have invested in irrigation systems. The logic being those customers are investing in lawn care for the long term and so want an LCO to help them maintain a healthy spotless lawn.
