Husemann’s Musings—Superintendents are finalizing fall herbicide applications to manage grassy & broadleaf weeds

Family matters – Take a moment to thank them for supporting our work
rings.jpgSince the last update, my wife and I celebrated our 20-year wedding anniversary. We took a one-week vacation to Pigeon Forge, Tenn. We found a comfortable secluded cabin in the hills of Pigeon Forge near Gatlinburg to spend some quality time together. Many of my friends and customers feel my wife deserves an award for putting up with me for 20 years.

On a side note – My grandson is a celebrity!
baby.jpgOur grandson, who is almost 12-months-old, is now officially a celebrity. His picture can be viewed on this Evenflo product package. He was used as a model for a product called the ExerSaucer Splash that will be on sale this holiday season. But back to the business of turf …

Use Insignia® fungicide during fall aerification for healthier turf come spring
Golf courses are well into fall aerification of fairways, tees and greens. The weather for completing this operation has been pretty favorable. I’m recommending Insignia fungicide be applied on the front side of fall aerifications that take place in October when soil temperatures historically are reduced into the low- to mid-50s.

Late fall aerifications frequently do not heal-over going into winter, which complicates the disease pattern the following spring and the general health of the turf. In these less than optimum soil temps, we have seen definite value in utilizing Insignia prior to stress induced turf.

Golf courses superintendents are finalizing fall herbicide applications to manage grassy and broadleaf weeds
Many golf course maintenance crews are doing fall-applied dollar spot fungicide applications which involve Curalan® EG fungicide and Emerald® fungicide. The fall time frame is becoming the time for golf course superintendents’ most aggressive dollar spot pressure of the season. Golf courses that let their guard down this fall and do not apply efficacious fungicide applications for dollar spot will deal with additional complications next spring.

Still need to order snow mold fungicide products?
snow-mold.jpgFall-applied snow mold fungicide selling is still in full swing. I am estimating that approximately 50 to 60 percent of golf course superintendents have not ordered their snow mold fungicide needs for this fall.

Dr. Joe Vargas will be doing some trials in late-October and early-November in Michigan at select courses with Insignia fungicide to measure the effectiveness of Insignia in reducing poa annua desiccation coming out of winter. Download our snow mold program recommendations here.

Until next time …
