About Thomas A. Nikolai, Ph.D., a.k.a “The Green Speed Doctor”

Thomas A. Nikolai, Ph.D., is the turfgrass academic specialist at Michigan State University and author of the book, “The Superintendent’s Guide to Controlling Putting Green Speed” published by Wiley & Sons, 2005.

Internationally recognized for his green speed methodologies, Nikolai has earned the nickname “The Green Speed Doctor.” His expertise stems from 10 years spent working on a golf course and 10 years working as a turfgrass research technician studying topics such as fertilization, topdressing, light-weight green rolling, cultivation techniques, PGRs, mowing heights, wetting agents, leaf mulching, irrigation scheduling, putting green root zone mixes and

alternative spikes. Nikolai is also faculty member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA).
