Spring reveals winter kill on Texas and Oklahoma golf course turfgrass
Spring has finally arrived in the Texas and Oklahoma markets and that is good news for some and bad news for others. This past winter was the coldest in this market in nearly 20 years. Due to this, the permanent damage to the turf was really unknown until the turf began to green up over the last couple of weeks. While green up has been extremely slow, lots of areas in Oklahoma there was definite winter kill.
As a result, some key golf courses in Oklahoma will be re-soding up to 30% of their turf on the golf course. In areas of Texas, the common and "off types" of Bermuda have been very slow to green up and will take several more weeks of warm weather to catch up with the other varieties of Bermuda grass. Most of the greens made it through the winter, and that is good news for fungicide sales. I do not know of anyone that will have to replant their greens.
Golf course superintendents from Texas attend FarmLinks
Had a good trip to FarmLinks with a group from Texas with some help from Estes. As usual, Brian Thompson did a great job with our customers. I also got a chance to see Ted Huhn and Wayne Ducote while visiting FarmLinks. My next trip will be in June.
Things continue to be good in my territory and I expect to have a good Summer.
