Great vacation and fishing in Boca Grande, FL
This is my first update since returning from vacation two weeks ago. We had a great time in Boca Grande, FL. For those of you considering vacations in Florida and would like to experience "Old Florida," you must consider Boca Grande. I went to high school not far from this area and it brought back some memories of fishing trips and the like. I did catch a nice black grouper of which my wife has a picture. I'll try to include it on the next update as "proof." We did go after some Tarpon one morning but couldn't get one on.
We are back. And, now... the dog days of summer are here.
The weather in my territory has continued to be hot and humid over the last few weeks. I've seen and heard about some small pythium outbreaks. We even saw pythium root dysfunction on some old bent/poa greens. It was interesting how the volutum species would attack only certain bentgrass that had segregated out over the years. Also, the poa was unharmed. The greens were mostly poa and they were thankful for that in this case. A rescue Insignia® fungicide spray was applied.
Fungicide application intervals are being shortened to 10-14 days right now. However, some superintendents are still trying to get up to 21 days of dollar spot control on fairways. It's about dollars and cents and they just have to live with some scaring/lesions. In some of these cases, they don't use any PGRs to allow the grass to grow out of it quicker.
