A respected turf voice and industry personality, Dr. Joe Vargas of Michigan State University drew a large crowd in BASF’s booth during his book signing today. Superintendents from around the U.S. and the world, including the U.K., Mexico, Spain, South Africa, New Zealand, the Philippines and Italy, swung by to shake hands and pick up a complimentary copy of “Management of Turfgrass Diseases.
Warm greetings for Dr. Vargas included “Hi, Joe! and “Doc, how are you? Others shared their affection for his turf books and their plans to read this third edition from cover to cover. It was obvious that he is a cherished part of this golf community and we’re thankful to share this time with him. Thanks, Dr. Vargas!
Naturalized Area Weed Control
BASF’s Kyle Miller reminded superintendents using naturalized areas that they require ‘low-maintenance’, not ‘no-maintenance.’ Some superintendents have misconceptions that naturalized areas mean a hands-off approach, but Kyle reiterated the need for preemergent herbicides to properly prepare naturalized areas. “Preemergent herbicides should be the pillar of naturalized area weed control, he said. One superintendent from Michigan knew exactly what Kyle was talking about because his naturalized areas did not include a preemergent herbicide program and it was infested with knee-high milkweed. It was a no-maintenance mess.

Golf Industry Show 2009
Thursday, February 5th, 2009

The lights just dimmed over our Golf Industry Show booth, indicating the end of a successful first day. I’m blogging from New Orleans today where Abita beer and shrimp gumbo flow as freely as the nearby Mississippi River.
We saw steady traffic in our booth and throughout the show. Some came to meet Clemson’s Dr. McCarty and walked away with a complimentary, signed copy of his book, “Color Atlas of Turfgrass Weeds. Others tested their knowledge in Turf Jeopardy rounds, signed up for a free laptop and LCD projector to be used for their local GCSAA chapter, learned about BASF herbicides from BASF and heard how they can apply research on their course from FarmLinks’s Mark Langner. Today’s dish: education with a side of fun.

BASF quizzes trade editors in Turf Jeopardy for charity at Golf Industry Show
If you read Golfdom, Golf Course Industry or Golf Course Management, you won’t want to miss seeing your favorite turf editors match wits for the title of Turf Media Jeopardy Champion!
A special round of Turf Jeopardy is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday featuring industry editors playing for a total of $3,000 to the following charities of their choice:
 |
Larry Aylward of Golfdom — Cleveland Food Bank: Aylward said he was struck by the overwhelming amount of families turning to his church’s food pantry for help feeding their families. Aylward will play for funds to benefit the Cleveland Food Bank, which he hopes can provide a greater reach to Cleveland-area neighbors in need during this difficult economy. |
 |
John Walsh of Golf Course Industry — The Ohio State University Karl Danneberger Turfgrass Science Endowment: Walsh said he wanted to play on behalf of the turfgrass program at Ohio State to support local education and the turf industry. The Karl Danneberger Endowment funds undergraduate Turfgrass Science club activities, travel for students to attend professional meetings or field trips, and other important program activities. |
 |
Seth Jones of Golf Course Management — Sickle Cell Disease Association of America (SCDAA) - Kansas Chapter: Jones is playing in memory of his friend and turf industry peer, John Vincent Wake, who died unexpectedly Monday, May 26, 2003, at the age of 32. Jones founded a fundraising event in his honor, the John Wake Laugh Olympics, which also raises funds for the SCDAA- Kansas Chapter. |
Great causes, all – come watch all three editors try their hand at BASF Turf Jeopardy!
